Going to the spa could be a bit confusing for a first time client. Whether its the various types of massages offered or the different spa packages that may sound like a cocktail rather than an actual pamper service, you can get lost and overwhelmed. Here is a description of massage services that may be offered in a common spa:
Swedish Massage (Relax) - This massage is best for relaxation of the mind and body. It includes a range of light to medium pressure with long, slow hand strokes of the muscles of the back, neck, scalp, arms, hands, legs, feet and chest.
Deep Tissue Massage (Stimulate/Restore) - This massage is used to stimulate and correct issues in the muscles. The pressure is a bit harder than a Swedish massage, ranging from medium-deep to deep. This massage can cover just one specific area or the whole body. There is a mixture of long palm and forearm strokes and short thumb strokes applied during this massage.
Sports Massage (Stretches) - This is a series of stretches that uses minimal or no oil with strokes and manual stretches applied by both the client and the therapist.
Thai Massage (Intense stretching) - This is also a series of stretching, just like the Sports massage, but the stretches are performed on cushioned mats on the floor.
Hot Stone Massage (Heat therapy) - This massage includes heated lava stones used in the massage strokes applied by the therapist. This massage loosens the muscles and relaxes the body.
Reflexology (Stimulate) - This massage is used to stimulate different areas of the hands and feet. There are areas of the hands and feet that represent parts of the body. The massage includes short hand and thumb strokes and thumb kneading.

Massage me!
Couples are always trying to soothe each other's pain even when it comes to giving massages. On television couples giving each other massages is seen as a romantic gesture but, in reality, it may actually be harmful. Massage is only meant to be performed by a Massage Therapist and that is for a number of reasons. CMTs (Certified Massage Therapists) and LMTs (Licensed Massage Therapists) where trained to know what and how to touch. Their academic training is at least eleven months long and to think that an amateur would attempt the same thing a therapist (who trained for at least 500 hours and had to practice continuously) is harmful to the client. Massage is an art but, is also taught to teach how it should be performed and what to avoid. All therapists are taught of the endangerment sites that are either forbidden from being touched or requires light pressure. These sites expose bodily organs, bones, veins and arteries. Visiting a therapist for a brief class would work out better than giving a freestyle massage and potentially hurting your other half.
Allergic?
When receiving a massage, the client may come in contact with various allergens. In an aromatherapy massage, there is an infusion of essential oils (therapeutic aromatic oils such as lavender, citrus) and base oils (massage lubricant eg. almond, grape seed, safflower oils). This infusion is used to create aromatic healing for the client. Chamomile and lavender induces sleep, citrus helps wake you up, eucalyptus is used to clean the air of sickness or can be applied to areas of muscular distress. These can be very beneficial to the client but, if the client is prone to allergic reactions, the therapist should be notified. Clients with allergic reactions to nuts shouldn't be massaged with almond oil and clients with contact dermatitis should have a skin test patch on a small area overnight to make sure they won't have an allergic reaction to the specific oil. Making sure that your therapist is well informed on your allergies and health conditions will help you when receiving a massage.

Going to the doctor vs. visiting a Massage Therapist
Many of us are guilty of running to the doctor for pain meds whenever we have physical pain but, that doesn't always work. Did you know that pain relievers and aspirin actually just numbens the pain and doesn't solve the problem. Yes, it seems as if the pain is gone and everything is right with the world but, did you ever wonder how the medicine knew where to go or did it just feel like your medicine only masked the pain? There are times when you should go to the doctor but, if you are only suffering from muscular distress, massage may just be the better choice. Ruling out this natural remedy may just cause you more stress on your body and it would be much more inexpensive if you just decide to visit your therapist.
There are also times when visiting your therapist isn't good. If you are suffering from a cold, flu or some other condition massage will have to wait. Getting a massage during a healing process actual heightens the sickness making it worst for the patient. Also, clients with chronic issues and physical ailments should visit a Physical Therapist, a Chiropractor or a Medical Doctor. When dealing with these conditions, a Massage Therapist may only add to the pain experienced by the client.
All in all, you should know your body. Feel it out and listen to what it is telling you. Receiving a massage may be just what you need instead of the common alternative.
